Dear CUPE 233 Members,
Another successful day on the picket line on day 3! Well-done, everyone.
We have not heard from the employer yet. But, rest assured our strike efforts are having an impact. We are coming from a position of strength and power.
The good news is withdrawing the services we as CUPE 233 members contribute to the university community gets right at the heart of the university. Let’s hope our employer recognizes our contributions in the same way we are seeing it from students, faculty, and other staff at TMU, as well as the broader labour movement.
Updates from the picket line today:
- There is a bus being organized by CUPE Local 3906 at McMaster University through the Ontario University Workers’ Coordinating Committee (OUWCC) to bring other CUPE members in the sector from Hamilton to our picket lines on Friday. CUPE 3902 at the University of Toronto will also be sending a group of their members to our picket lines then too. We are planning on having a BBQ event on that day!
- CUPE Local 416 representing outside City of Toronto workers made a financial donation today in the amount of $5,000 towards our strike fund.
- Olivia Chow, candidate in the 2023 Toronto mayoral by-election, reached out to us today wanting to join our picket line in solidarity with us! See picture below 🙂
Strike pay top-up
- The Strike Committee is happy to announce that we can guarantee an additional $300 top-up on our strike pay for a total of $600/week for 20 hours (4 hours per day) of picketing!
- Reminder that strike pay is not taxable income.

What to do if you see a contractor performing our work?
If you see a contractor on campus performing the work of our bargaining unit, please take a picture and notify the Local Executive and/or our CUPE National Representative immediately.
Thank you again for another heartwarming day. See you tomorrow.
In solidarity,
Your Strike Committee
